Necklaces and Necklines

First, consider your comfort. No matter how well a necklace length traditionally fits a neckline style, your confidence in wearing the necklace is extremely important. You may carry off very unconventional pairings beautifully; consider your comfort level and style.

There are things you might want to be aware of when buying a necklace. Does the color complement your skin tone? Will it go with clothes you have - or is it special enough to buy something specifically for the necklace?. Are you able to carry off large chunky styles, or are you more comfortable in dainty or classic styles? Finally, how long is the necklace and how will it fit with various necklines.

Necklace Lengths

Collar

12 – 13 inches long

Sits above the neckbone

Works well with U-necks, boat necks, and off neck style necklines

Choker

14 – 16 inches long

Sits at the neckbone

Complements just about anything, but you may want to go to a princess size if you have a wide neck.

Princess

17 – 19 inches long

Sits below the neckbone

Very versatile

Works well with crew necks, high necks and plunging necklines

Matinee

20 – 25 inches long

Excellent for casual and business wear

Projects a professional image

Opera

26 to 36 inches long

Goes well with high necks, turtleneck or crew necks

Can be worn as a single strand, doubled, or knotted at the neck

Can work from day to evening

Necklines Styles

Bateau

This style sweeps across your collarbone to the edge of your shoulders.

Try one or two strands worn close to your throat.

Halter

This is a difficult neckline to accessorize with a necklace because most styles will touch the neckline at some point. You may want to consider working with earrings instead of a necklace.

Jewel

This is a high rounded neckline that sits next to your throat.

Most necklace lengths and styles will work well.

Low Back

Consider accenting your back with a back dangle or a lariat tied in back.

Open Collar

Try a chunky necklace that will stand out behind the collar.

Scoop

This is a U-shaped neckline that may or may not mimic the U in the back.

Multiple strands that fill in the U go well with this style.

Square Neck

Try to avoid anything to angular, an easy curving shape in a choker or princess length should work well.

Strapless

Anything close to the neck (under 18 inches) works well. Consider a choker or princess style, Y-drop, tin-cup necklace, pearls or a necklace with a back dangle.

Avoid necklaces that “crowd” the neckline.

Turtleneck

Any of the longer strands will work well.

V-Neck

Consider imitating the V lines with a Y-drop, pendant or solitaire.
